Someone else, on the other hand, might do fine with that approach. I have an English-language paperback , an Italian-language Kindle ebook , and an Italian-language audiobook from Audible.
I chose this book because this series is widely translated and easily available, in both text and audio formats. Finally, J. Rowling wrote this series to grow with her readers, which means that book 1 is written at an elementary level, and each sequel is written at a slightly higher grade level. Perfect for language learners. For that reason I have a specific method I am employing. For chapter one I read the Italian text with the audio the first time through.
I wanted to see how much of it I could understand with what I remembered of the chapter from reading it in English several years ago. I got the gist of it, but was dissatisfied with the level of my comprehension. Next I read the Italian text no audio alongside the English text, switching back and forth between them.
I read the Italian sentence. If I understood it, I read the next sentence, and so on through a paragraph. Would you care for a lemon drop? Le andrebbe una Frizlemon? Click here to learn more. As you might imagine, this painstaking approach takes a fair bit of time, but I am a detail-oriented person! My reward is full comprehension. My expectation is that each chapter will take significantly less time than the one before it. For chapter 3 I did steps 1, 2, and 4. I will probably do the same for chapter 4. It may look daunting to some, but again my goal is comprehension, and listening and reading to the same content multiple times is a great way to train the ear, brain, the mouth, and the eyes.
Kids ask for the same bedtime stories night after night for a reason! Eventually my comprehension of each chapter will be greater, and I will be able to eliminate more of the steps above. There are several methods to reading and listening for language learning, so I am outlining what I personally am doing with this book and this particular approach.
Does my proposed method sound excessive? What would you change and why? You may have a different approach that works well for you. Comment below and let me know about it. I am trying to ensure that most of my focus is on Italian so that I have the greatest success with it that I can.
Because of my earlier language challenge with Korean, I have made connections with other Korean speakers that I would like to maintain, and because Korean is part of my heritage, I continue to have an avid interest in pursuing it. This current challenge is very motivating because it will be for only 2 months, which means that the day 60 fatigue that I experienced in the A1C will be the point at which the Academy ends.
I can then relax in that fatigue and take a break before setting another focus challenge and moving forward at full steam again. We are learning some new approaches to language learning, which we are required to write down and analyze in order to create our own plan for the duration of the course. The Academy also has spreadsheets in which to track our progress. The statistics are then analyzed for us to see exactly how we are spending our language-learning time in relation to our established goals.

Once my daily goals for these are met, I can pursue other areas such as grammar, writing, and pronunciation. This helps with developing discipline for sure! Below is my baseline video for Italian. What do you think of my Italian? I know. I have a long way to go! Have you made videos of yourself speaking your target language?
Have you found them helpful to your progress?
Quindi parliamo a grandi pennellate, come i dipinti impressionisti.
ASL was a semester class. I was making progress in the first three languages but not very impressive progress. Also, it was taking a lot of time. Focusing on Korean was hard for me to do.
ASL study pretty much ended with the end of the semester. But I did it because I felt strongly that Korean was the language I needed to improve first. So we speak in large brush strokes, like impressionist paintings. They are lovely, but we can never grasp much detail to any of our pictures. Well, my Korean has improved quite a bit from 3 months ago. I grew up speaking both English and Korean, but I was never formally educated in Korean. I learned the letters and how to read, haltingly. I never pursued vocabulary or grammar study.
I guess I took it for granted. Many decades of being in a language rut later, I decided to do something about it. I started pushing myself out of that rut and have finally gotten some momentum and have found my groove. I continue to work on maintaining my Korean, so it is more challenging to work on my Italian in some ways.
I studied Italian in college several decades ago. It is a beautiful language, and I am very motivated to become fluent in it. Unlike Korean, I have no personal connections with Italian, whether through family, friends, or travel. That is the challenge though. Finding time to study is unsurprisingly and surprisingly difficult.
Unsurprising because we live in a very busy culture. Technology allows each generation to squeeze more activities into a day than previous generations. For every time-saving device we accumulate, we add two more things to accomplish to our day. But that is exactly why I have discovered that in order to make progress, we need to commit to focusing on one target for a period of time. My day challenge for Korean was a bit long. I started losing steam around day I really had to find my second wind to finish the commitment.
My Italian challenge is for 2 months. I can really dig in for 2 months, knowing the light at the end of the tunnel is not so distant. Then I can reassess my language-learning needs. One is Spanish, which I learned a bit in elementary school and again in high school.
With my 3-month pursuit of Korean, I found a Meetup group with Korean speakers and some Korean iTalki tutors, and I befriended a Korean speaker who had started coming to my church. Of course I also have some family that speak Korean. Open your list. The apartment is very spacious, well equipped and furnished, and clean.
