Wiazemsky uses this storyline to portray, intelligently and with great depth, three different female characters, whose emotions and trajectories are as believable as they are riveting, even when nothing much happens.

Those women are from our time, and from all times. They are very real while being archetypes, and that makes them infinitely relatable.

There's a wonderful classicism to the way Wiazemsky writes the structure of the book, the vocabulary, the construction of the sentences that links this novel to a French tradition of novel-writing that goes way back in time, and it creates a glowing, nostalgic aura that permeates the reading experience.

It is a very feminine book, but in the best sense of the word - without nauseating sentimentality, or fake romanticism, but with a great sense of psychology and great subtlety things happen that are actually only hinted at, creating what is almost a mystery. But what Wiazemsky does best is something very hard to describe: she has managed to capture something elusive and impalpable, the wonders of a place where childhood lingers on, of the very specific and maybe very French atmosphere of a holiday house, where a family gathers each Summer, where children build what will later become beautiful, bittersweet memories that nothing can bring back.

The magic of such a place is at the heart of this book, and gives it its soul. Znikomek rated it liked it May 02, Catherine rated it it was amazing Mar 15, Francoise rated it liked it Jan 26, Urmila T. Ashrafee rated it it was amazing Apr 02, Alice rated it it was ok Feb 16,
